DEHRADUN: Following an Uttarakhand cabinet meeting, chief secretary S S Sandhu said on Friday that "eight institutes are studying the reasons behind land subsidence in Joshimath and the role of NTPC's Tapovan-Vishnugad project is included in their probe."
Sandhu added: "We will act on the basis of the report. All work at the NTPC tunnel is closed till further orders." The cabinet announced a slew of measures for the affected families, including a "daily food allowance and a six-month waiver on power and water bills starting November 2022".
Joshimath crisis natural disaster, not man-made, says CM Dhami
Over
the past 24 hours, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has said it twice
that the Joshimath land subsidence issue is a "natural disaster and not
caused by anyone". He said this in Joshimath on Thursday and reiterated
it on Friday before the start of the cabinet meeting in Dehradun.
Everybody should believe that Joshimath will be saved: Uttarakhand CM Dhami
Chief
secretary SS Sandhu toed the line. "The report which we have so far
with us mentions that Joshimath is located on the remains of a landslide
mass, and a hard rock surface under the base of the town is missing.
So, the foundation of the town is weak and the soil on which these
houses have been built is extremely loose. Therefore, we have been
addressing it as a natural disaster and not man-made. Cities which are
based on hard rocks do not face such problems. As for other reasons, our
teams of experts are probing the issue," Sandhu said on Friday.
Sandhu
further said that the Joshimath issue was also highlighted in the 1976
Mishra committee report. "Water belongs to nature. Our institutes are
trying to find out where the water is coming from," he further added.
Meanwhile,
social activists and local environmentalists pointed out that the
government's stance would mean diverting blame from relentless
construction in the region that may have actually aggravated the
situation.
Padma Bhushan recipient and noted environmentalist Anil
Joshi was of the view that any construction beyond the height of 1,000
metres "must be taken very seriously and approved only after a thorough
study."
Joshimath land subsidence: Hotel owner's family demands compensation
Opposition party members pounced on the government's classification of the Joshimath sinking. Congress state unit chief Karan Mahara, told TOI: "Nature was giving signals since 2021 but the BJP government was sleeping over the issue."
